Full Flight . . . Djokovic?

The game starts with the serve, literally, figuratively, and every which way. From the structure of the rallies to the confidence of the person hitting the serve, it all flows from there. “Flow,” however, was not a word that used to come to mind when you thought of Novak Djokovic’s serve (see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches); at this time last year he was, as many people have pointed out, hitting it overhand like a cricket bowler. You wouldn't know it today. Asked about his serving performance in the Dubai final on Saturday(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches), Djokovic needed just two words to sum it up: “It’s incredible.” He kept talking about how hard he’s been working on it, how much it has improved, how important it is, but he didn’t really need to elaborate.

Djokovic missed just three first serves in the first set, and in the second he used it to get him out of jail a few times. More than the stats, though, what’s incredible to me is how much better—smoother, with all parts finally integrated—his serve looks. Against Roger Federer,
(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches)Djokovic’s game really did flow from it. Serving or returning, he tilted the rallies the way he wanted them, toward Federer’s backhand side. More important, every one of his shots had more pace and energy than it had just a day before. The night-time atmosphere, the opponent, the fact that it was a final all came together to produce a different Djokovic from the one we had seen in Dubai up until then. In Melbourne, Djokovic said that the glow of the Davis Cup hadn’t worn off; in Dubai, it was the glow of his long-delayed return to the major-title winner’s circle that hadn’t worn off. Suddenly, he has that champion’s aura, and champion’s ability to rise to the occasion.

I thought I had seen the best of Djokovic in his last three matches at the Australian, but he was even better in the first set against Federer in Dubai. It began with his serve and return—he was reading Federer’s deliveries exceptionally well. But his core confidence soon flooded every part of his game. He hit passing shots on the run and dictated with his inside-in forehand. At the height of his confidence, Djokovic pulled Federer out wide with a forehand, and on his next shot cut an even sharper forehand angle that Federer had no chance of tracking down. It was the kind of flashy, elegant, excessive shot that we associate with Federer at his best. There was something Federer-esque about the way Djokovic reached “full flight” once he had established a lead late in the first set.
(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches)

What about Federer himself? I thought a backhand that he missed very early in the match was telling. He was down break point at 1-1, but had moved Djokovic off the ad court with his serve. Federer got a good look at a mid-court backhand, and the down the line was wide open. It appeared that he was going to go that way, but changed his mind to go back crosscourt. The result was a terrible shank, the first of many on the evening.

There was an indecisiveness to his whole performance. Federer seemed caught between his new tactics, where he takes every opportunity to attack, and his old tactics of slice, variety, and patience that he has often used against Djokovic in the past. On the one hand, he tried to belt forehands and take over points; on the other, he was content to simply slice Djokovic’s second serve back in the court. He had opportunities to run around it in the ad court and go after a forehand—a signature tactic of the Annacone era thus far—but he didn’t take them.

Credit that, again, to the New Djokovic. Slice, variety, patience: They aren’t working against him these days. Nothing is. Everything about his game, from his serve to his mental approach, is in the ascent; he played this match as if he expected to win, which has often not been the case against Federer in the past. Now that he seems to have cleared away a few mental demons, we’ll see how high Djokovic's version of “full flight” takes him. Whatever happens, it’s great to see this most natural and mobile and athletic of players flowing around the court the way he should.

Vz-cw Many, including myself, have wondered whether Caroline Wozniacki
(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches) is a real number one. Many, including myself, have wondered at the same time whether Vera Zvonareva is a real number two (or three, for that matter). However those questioned are ultimately answered, they put on a marquee-worthy show in the Doha final on Saturday. It was high-energy skirmish in which both players fought for every shot and scrap of territory without a choke or second thought between them.

It appears that Zvonareva has reached her level, and that her fate at this point in her career is simple. If she can outhit you, she’ll probably beat you: if she can’t, she won’t. In the last three majors, she beat everyone except Serena and Clijsters, and when she played those two, the results were pretty much foregone conclusions. She wasn’t in any of those matches.

But Wozniacki, however well she’s been playing, and whatever new aggressive tactics she’s been using, is a different case. Zvonareva can outhit her, so she can beat her, as she did in the semifinals of the U.S. Open last year, and as she did, again in straight sets, in Doha. It was one of the finest performances I’ve  seen from the Russian, and, like Djokovic’s in Dubai, one you expect from a champ. She came up with nine aces, often right when she needed them. She was extremely solid from the ground, especially on the backhand side, and she played with a well-measured aggression. Just as well-measured were the drop shots and topspin lobs that she threw in at highly opportune moments. As the second set progressed and Wozniacki, as she likes to do, kept hanging around, tears came to my eyes—or at least I imagined that I would soon see Zvonareva crying them once she blew a second set that belonged to her. They never materialized, and her nerves never got the best of her. Again, like Djokovic, Zvonareva played as if she expected to win.
(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches)

It was a great two-week run for Wozniacki, but she had to come down to earth. She had won the week before with some of the best tennis of her career, and then gotten sick to start this tournament. It might have been a blessing in disguise: She kept the points short out of necessity. But from the start, this wasn’t Wozniacki’s day. She sent balls wide that she never misses, and when she did play well, her opponent had all the answers. Wozniacki slammed her racquet—impressively—to the court and showed more frustration than she had this year so far.
(see 12Bet.com for the latest Matches)

Was it a match that pointed out the limits of Wozniacki’s game once again? That’s possible; she’s been more assertive, but she couldn’t out-hit Zvonareva. Still, I thought her demeanor and her effort more than made up for that. Whatever happened, by the start of the next point, she was composed again. Like Zvonareva, Wozniacki expected to win, and even on a bad day she gave herself a chance to do it. That, as much as anything else, is what No. 1 players do.

McLeish: Greatest personal achievement

The Blues won the trophy for the first time since 1963 after they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley(see 12Bet.com).

The impressive Nikola Zigic gave them a first-half lead, only for Robin van Persie to equalise for Arsenal.

The match looked to be going to extra time until substitute Obafemi Martins capitalised on an 89th minute mix-up between Laurent Koscielny and Wojciech Szczesny to tap into an empty net.
"It feels like the greatest ever personal achievement," McLeish said.

"When you consider the team we were up against, we weren't given a prayer really.
"We believed today and that was a titanic performance from the players."

Birmingham (see 12Bet.com) have now qualified for the Europa League, and McLeish knows he will need to strengthen the squad in the summer to cope with a fourth competition.

big battles

"We are proud to win this and to go into Europe is not without its problems as you need a strong squad to do it," he said.

"I have spoken to our owner [Carson Yeung]. He was up at the presentation gallery. I'm very pleased for Carson - it is his birthday. He must think it's easy being an owner of a football club - ninth [in the League] last season and a Carling Cup. But we have some big battles ahead of us."

Arsenal (see 12Bet.com) manager Arsene Wenger admitted that Koscielny and Szczesny were down after the mistake and said it was up to their team-mates to pick them up.

"Both of them are destroyed,'' said Wenger. "We have to lift them up again and help them, that is what a team is about, that is part of the game.'

"It was a lack of communication, determination a little bit as well. Like always, when the ball is in no-man's land, someone has to take responsibility and go for it. What was amazing [was that] no-one was going for the ball from Birmingham(see 12Bet.com).

"I am bitterly disappointed, like the whole team. We had some problems to start the game, the number of games we played caught up a little bit on us. It took us a while to get into the rhythm and pace of the game.
"In the second half we were on top, unfortunately we couldn't score the second goal and, in the end, we made a mistake that left us no time at all to respond.''

"Cochulito"
  • World championship fights: 18-2, 14 KOs...
  • WBC bantamweight world champion, one successful defense...
  • WBO bantamweight world champion, two succesful defensese...
  • Former two-time WBO jr. bantamweight world champion, eight successful defenses...
  • Former WBO flyweight world champion, three successful defenses...
At the age of 31, Fernando is a 14-year pro. The WBC and WBO bantamweight world champion, he won the WBO title in March, 2009, and added the WBC title in April, 2010.

One of Mexico's best fighters, Fernando became only the fourth Mexican to win world titles in three different weight divisions. The others in that elite group are Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.
He is also a former two-time WBO jr. bantamweight world champion. Fernando won that title for the first time in June, 2002, and made one successful title defense before losing the title in August, 2003. He regained the title in April, 2005, and made seven more successful title defenses. He vacated the title to move up in weight. Fernando won the WBO flyweight world title December, 2000, and made three successful title defenses.

He is coming off a second-round knockout win against Jovanny Soto in his last fight, a nontitle 10-rounder, on December 10.

He made his first defense of the WBC title and second defense of the WBO title in his previous fight on July 17, and scored a third-round knockout win against Rafael Concepcion.

Fightwriter.com's Graham Houston reported [excerpts]: Montiel looked tremendous in his third-round destruction of Rafael Concepcion in their bantamweight title fight televised on Fox Sports Espanol.

This was Montiel's first bout since his upset stoppage victory over Hozumi Hasegawa in Japan, and he went out to make a statement in front of the Mexican crowd.

Concepcion...fought gamely before being retired by his corner after nine rounds in a war with Jorge Arce, and he went 12 rounds with the sharpshooting Filipino Nonito Donaire. Montiel, however, simply blew him away.

Big left hooks from Montiel had Concepcion down twice in the second round and hanging on so desperately that referee Robert Byrd told the judges to take a point. It was obvious after this 10-6 round from hell that Concepcion would not be able to last much longer, and, sure enough, Montiel flattened him with a right hand after 67 seconds of round three.

There is no doubting the quality of Montiel's performance on Saturday night. He looked sensational. [12Bet.com]

Fernando won the WBC bantamweight world title in his previoius fight on April 30 with a fourth-round TKO against defending champion Hozumi Hasegawa in Tokyo.

After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com [excerpts]: Hasegawa has been one of Japan's finest for several years. Montiel, one of Mexico's best, is a three-division titleholder....

Hasegawa, a southpaw, had been on quite a run, scoring five knockouts in a row inside four rounds against some credible opponents. Between that fact and his being at home, Hasegawa was the clear favorite. Through the first three-plus rounds, it looked like he'd coast to a win, even though it turned out he had suffered a broken jaw from a Montiel uppercut in the first round. Yet he continued to fight and...lead on all three scorecards, 30-27 on two and 29-28 on the third.

However, Montiel landed a hammering left hook to the face with seven seconds left in the fourth round. Hasegawa went reeling into the ropes and Montiel pounced. He landed several more shots, snapping a defenseless Hasegawa's head back. He was out on his feet as American referee Laurence Cole jumped in to stop the fight just as the bell to end the round was ringing. It was a shocking ending and silenced the pro-Hasegawa crowd of about 15,000 at the famed Budokan Hall, while Montiel and his team joyously celebrated. [12Bet.com]

Fernando is undefeated - 10-0 with one technical draw - in his last 11 fights. His current undefeated streak also includes two of his career-best wins: in addition to beating Hasegawa in his last fight, Fernando scored a dominant fourth-round TKO win against former 1996 Mexican Olympian and WBA super flyweight world champion Martin Castillo in February, 2008.

Fernando said through an interpreter, "I always stay in the gym, no matter what, even if I don't have any fights or anything. I'm always training here in Los Mochis, getting ready for anything that might come up.
"I train at my father's gym. It's named 'Cochul Montiel School of Boxing,' but it should really be called 'Welcome to Hell.' "

Fernando's hometown of Los Mochis is home to several former world champions and nearly every fighter from Los Mochis has spent some time training in Montiel's gym at one time or another.
Fernando is experienced against top opposition, and has fought former world champions Hozumi Hasegawa (TKO4), Martin CastilloJhonny Gonzalez (L12), Ivan Hernandez (TKO7), Mark Johnson (L12), Ruben Sanchez (KO2), Pedro Alcazar (TKO6), Juan Cordoba (KO1), Isidro Garcia (TKO7), and Cruz Carvajal (TKO4). (TKO4),

Regarding his nickname, Fernando said, "My father's name is Manuel Jesus and when one of my aunts was real small, she couldn't pronounce it right. She called her brother 'Cochul,' and now all of his sons are called 'Cochulito.' " [12Bet.com]

He won the WBA interim title in August, 2009. He is also a former IBF flyweight world champion - he won that title in July, 2007, and has made three successful title defenses. He vacated the title to move up in weight.
Nonito is coming off a fourth-round KO of Wladimir Sidorenko on December 4th in Anaheim, Calif; it was Nonito's first fight as a bantamweight.

After the fight, Dan Rafael of ESPN.com wrote [excerpts]: Donaire insisted before the fight that he was purely focused on Sidorenko and he was apparently right because he turned in a sensational performance, with the most complete fight of his career. Sidorenko was no pushover, though. He is an accomplished, experienced fighter who held a bantamweight title from 2005 to 2008 and had only lost close decisions to Anselmo Moreno in title bouts.
But Donaire blew him out in stunningly-lopsided fashion, showing why many have him ranked on the pound-for-pound list. Donaire looked much bigger than Sidorenko and nearly knocked him out in the first round when Donaire ripped him with a right hand. Sidorenko fell to the mat and nearly broke his right knee as he collapsed on top of it.

By the second round, Sidorenko's face was a bloody mess from eating so many shots, as Donaire bounced around and fired accurate shots with both hands. Sidorenko had no answers and no prayer to win at that point. A left to the top of the head dropped Sidorenko again in the third round, and a left-right combination dumped him to his knees in the fourth round. Sidorenko had the look of resignation on his bloody face, and referee Marcos Rosales stopped the fight without completing a count at 1 minute, 48 seconds. [12Bet.com ]

Nonito made his first defense of the WBA title on July 10: he dominated the fight and scored an eighth-round TKO win against Hernan Marquez.
In April, 2009, Nonito scored a sensational fourth-round TKO win against previously undefeated former amateur standout Raul Martinez.

Fightwriter.com's Graham Houston reported [excerpts]: Nonito Donaire...looked like a monster as he destroyed previously unbeaten Raul Martinez in four rounds. Donaire towered over the challenger from San Antonio...and when Martinez went down twice in the first round it was obvious that this fight would not last long.
I had expected a stiff challenge from Martinez but he was outclassed and getting hurt by big shots, especially Donaire's left uppercut. Down again in the second, he was on borrowed time and I couldn't fault referee Pete Podgorski for waving the finish when Martinez was sent flying to the canvas by a left uppercut in the fourth. Although Martinez got up and seemed eager to continue, four knockdowns in four rounds was quite enough. [12Bet.com ]

Nonito won the IBF flyweight world title in July, 2007, with a spectacular, devastating one-punch knockout against previously undefeated defending champion Vic Darchinyan. The knockout was so devastating that during his post-fight interview, Darchinyan didn't seem to realize he had just been knocked out.
Boxing News reported [excerpts]: Darchinyan...was caught with a left hook that was reminiscent of the perfect punch Sugar Ray Robinson used to knock out Gene Fullmer 50 years ago. What should not be forgotten is how well Donaire fought up the point of the stoppage. [12Bet.com ]

The fight won The Ring's annual awards for "2007 Knockout of the Year" and "2007 Upset of the Year."
Nonito had an impressive amateur career, as well, which included wins against Ron Siler, who made the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, and current pro jr. middleweight prospect James Kirkland.

Regarding his nickname, Nonito said, "I got my name because I was pretty fast. Like in the gym, I was a lot faster than my brother or other fighters. They started calling me that around my fourth, fifth fight."

Heat 82, Celtics 85

Key Moment [12Bet.com]

Boston’s offense couldn’t get anything going in the first half of this afternoon’s showdown against the Miami Heat and managed to make just 37.2 percent of its shot attempts over the first two quarters. The offense was stagnant and simply couldn’t score in its traditional halfcourt sets, so Rajon Rondo decided to change the pace when the second half began.
He was able to make that happen in the third quarter with the help of his teammates picking up their defense. Boston forced the Heat into misses on six of their first seven shots of the half. Those misses allowed Rondo to get out in transition and start his team’s offense before the Heat could set up their strong halfcourt defense. It couldn’t have paid off more, as the C’s strung together an enormous scoring run while the Heat struggled.
Boston began the half on a 12-1 run and dropped in the first eight shots it attempted. Those baskets came from four different Celtics as they shared the ball and displayed that team camaraderie that LeBron James recently acknowledged through the media.
The big run to begin the third quarter helped to morph Boston’s four-point deficit into a double-digit lead, much to the thanks of Rondo increasing the pace of the game. He totaled nine points, four rebounds and three assists in the quarter to spark the Celtics’ offense and change the outlook of this game.
Boston wound up shooting a whopping 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the field in the quarter and sent Miami into the penalty early because of its constant effort to attack. Overall, the C’s outscored Miami 35-18 in the third, and although they were outscored by 10 in the final quarter, the cushion they built in the third was just enough to hang on for the win and secure a regular season series win against the Heat.

Key Box Score Line [12Bet.com]

Every triple-double is special, but when a player strings one together that completely invigorates his teammates in a statement win, it means that much more.
Rajon Rondo took it upon himself this afternoon to carry the Celtics to a huge win over the Miami Heat. Doc Rivers couldn’t help from acknowledging that fact during his postgame press conference.
“In a lot of ways, I thought Rondo just willed us the game,” said Rivers.
He finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to record his third triple-double of the season, but it wasn’t just the statistics that meant the world to the Celtics. Rondo energized his teammates by flipping the switch to attack mode in the third quarter. He picked the Heat apart with precision, and his heightened play was contagious for the rest of the players sporting green and white this afternoon.
In addition to attacking the Heat at every opportunity, he also wound up playing game-changing defense in a matchup the Celtics wouldn't typically be excited about. Rondo took instructions from his coach but completely misinterpreted them, and that resulted in him defending LeBron James for the majority of the second half.
“That wasn’t a set game plan for him to guard LeBron,” said Rivers. “We just wanted ball pressure and we talked about that at halftime. And Rondo took that upon himself [as] whoever was bringing the ball up, he was just going to guard and harass. And I thought that changed the game for us. I thought that energized us for a little stretch and I thought that’s why we won the game.”
In the end, Boston did win the game, and Rondo made that happen. Triple-doubles are always sweet, but this one must have tasted a bit sweeter than the others for the energetic point guard.

Doc Rivers on Rajon Rondo defending LeBron James: "And even (Assistant Coach) Lawrence (Frank) was like ‘We can’t do this!’ And I said, ‘You’re right, but we’re just going to keep doing it.’ "
