Serie A - Ancelotti to take PSG job

Former Chelsea and AC Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti will be named as the new head coach of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, according to widespread reports in France.

It is expected that current coach Antoine Kombouare will be relieved of his position despite the club currently sitting top of Ligue 1 heading into 2012.
PSG's ambitious Qatari owners are believed to have convinced Ancelotti to take up the position by offering the Italian a salary which would ensure he is the best paid coach in the history of French football.
A report in L'Equipe on Wednesday morning claimed Ancelotti stands to earn as much as 6 million euros per year when he takes charge at Parc des Princes.
Both L'Equipe and Le Parisien report that Ancelotti's appointment on a two-and-a-half year contract will be confirmed imminently, and it is believed he will travel to the Middle East on Sunday to join the club's winter training camp in Qatar and Dubai.

The Italian won the Double in the 2009-10 season at Chelsea and twice won the Champions League with Milan, as well as finishing Italian champions in 2004.
Speculation has already started as to which players could be joining Ancelotti in France, primarily due to his strong links with Milan, the club that Leonardo left to become PSG's sporting director this summer.
Milan striker Alexandre Pato, who worked under Ancelotti with the Rossoneri, is believed to be a target for around 50 million euros after voicing his frustration with life at San Siro in an interview in the Italian press earlier this week.
Real Madrid playmaker Kaka, who won the Champions League under Ancelotti at Milan in 2007, is also believed to be a target, while former England international David Beckham is expected to join the French club on a free transfer from LA Galaxy.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Serie A - Doni admits illegal betting

Italy's new match-fixing scandal gained momentum when legal testimony showed former Atalanta captain and Italy midfielder Cristiano Doni admitting his role in illicit betting.

Reports also said another accused player, ex-Piacenza defender Carlo Gervasoni, had told prosecutors that many more Italian matches than previously suspected involved illegal betting and match-fixing including games in Serie A.Promoted top-flight side Atalanta had six points deducted and Doni was banned for three and a half years in August after a football federation probe into betting in Serie B last term, but Doni had never previously admitted his guilt.

On Tuesday, the ANSA news agency published his testimony in front of criminal prosecutors where he said he engaged in illegal betting "only because of the passion which linked me to my team and the hope of being able to help them to the objective (of promotion) that season".Atalanta, thriving in 11th in Serie A despite the deduction, issued a statement last week saying they had reacted with "surprise and great bitterness" after hearing rumours Doni had admitted involvement following his arrest this month.

Another 16 people were arrested as police, following up on the football federation investigation, said it had evidence of connections between the accused and criminal groups in Singapore and Eastern Europe.
Italy has only just got over a previous match-fixing scandal which led to Juventus being demoted from the top flight in 2006 and stripped of two league titles.Juve have only now fully recovered from the blow and are joint-top of Serie A at the mid-season break.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Serie A - Genoa sack Malesani, appoint Marino

Genoa have sacked manager Alberto Malesani and appointed former Parma coach Pasquale Marino to replace him the day after a 6-1 drubbing at Napoli.

Genoa sit 10th in Serie A but the heavy loss in Naples on Wednesday ended Malesani's tenure. Malesani took charge in June after impressing in a spell with Bologna.Marino (pictured), who has been out of management since he was sacked by Parma in April, has signed a contract until June 30, 2013.

"Genoa has entrusted the conduct of the first team to Pasquale Marino," the club stated. "The club thanks the coach Alberto Malesani for the work he did during his time at the club."
Marino's tenure at Parma ended with the club perched just two points above the relegation zone, but he remains a respected coach whose CV boasts four promotions and qualification for the UEFA Cup with Udinese in 2008.

"Getting a great club like Genoa is the most beautiful Christmas gift I could imagine," Marino, who also replaced Malesani at Udinese in 2007, said."I was contacted this morning. I want to thank the chairman and the club and intend to repay the faith they have shown in me. I'm looking forward to starting work."
Marino will be presented to the media when the team resumes training on December 29.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Serie A - Whistle-blower rewarded with Italy call

A Serie B player who has spent most of his career in the lower leagues has been asked to train with the Italy team as reward for reporting an attempted bribe to police.

Simone Farina, who plays for modest second-tier side Gubbio, was offered 200,000 euros to help fix a Coppa Italia match against Cesena on November 30.He refused the bribe, which was allegedly made by a former team-mate at a different club, and reported the incident to police."I loved what (Farina) did, he has shown great courage and extraordinary inner strength," Italy boss Cesare Prandelli was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport.

However, Gubbio club president Marco Fioriti warned against treating Farina as a hero.
"His behaviour was normal, a normal person who has sound principles in mind," he said on the club website.
"So he is to be admired for the courage he has shown and for the honesty, but let's not make him a hero."
Police recently arrested dozens of people including former Italy international and Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni, in what has become the largest corruption scandal in Italy since the Calciopoli affair that saw Juventus relegated and several teams punished for bribing and intimidating referees.

Former Italy striker Giuseppe Signori was also detained in the summer along with 14 others as Italian authorities continue long-standing investigations into betting scams.Gubbio, who play in a tiny 5,300-seater stadium and whose wages are believed to be among the lowest in the division, won promotion to Italy's second division for the first time in 63 years last season.Farina joined the club in 2007, having also played for Citadella, Gualdo and Celano in Italy's semi-professional third and fourth divisions. He was a trainee at Roma but never made the grade - interestingly, he was inadvertently involved in a false accounting scandal when Roma were fined 60,000 euros for over-valuing youth-team players in a series of complicated transfers that were engineered to fiddle the club's profit margins.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Cristiano Doni admits fixing Italian Serie B matches

CREMONA, Italy (AP) – Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has reportedly admitted to fixing Serie B matches last season involving his own squad, although he says club officials weren't involved.

Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy on Monday in an ongoing investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games. After five days of solitary confinement, Doni was permitted to meet with his lawyer Friday and was then questioned by prosecutors."Yes, I knew about the fix for Atalanta-Piacenza. I gave my approval and I bet," Doni is quoted as saying by Saturday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "I also tried to do the same thing for the match with Ascoli. But they were all personal initiatives, I'm not part of any organization. … The club didn't know anything."Atalanta beat Piacenza 3-0, while the Ascoli vs. Atalanta match finished 1-1.

In June, 16 people were arrested as part of the first wave of the inquiry, and Doni was then placed under investigation.Doni said at the time that he was innocent but in August he was banned from football for 3½ years by the Italian football federation's disciplinary committee, and Atalanta — which was promoted to Serie A for this season — was given a six-point penalty."I said yes to the fixes because Atalanta benefited," Doni said, according to the Gazzetta. "I would have never listened to anyone who offered me money to make my squad lose. I made a mistake and now I can't even look at myself in the mirror because it makes me think about all the pain I've caused my family and the fans.

"The relegation to Serie B hurt me and that's why I accepted these offers," Doni added. "By winning we were sure to be promoted."The latest arrests come five years after another major match-fixing scandal — restricted to club and referee officials but not players — resulted in Juventus getting relegated to Serie B for a season, plus point penalties for Lazio, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Reggina in Serie A.The prosecutors in Cremona, who are leading the current investigation, have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America and that has allegedly been in operation for more than 10 years.
Three Serie A matches from last season are also under investigation: Brescia vs. Bari, Brescia vs. Lecce and Napoli vs. Sampdoria.

A phone call was reportedly intercepted between Doni and Ravenna goalkeeping coach Nicola Santoni — who was also arrested — in which the pair discuss tampering with Santoni's iPhone, which had been confiscated by police in June.Doni was arrested on suspicion of attempting to destroy evidence. He was due to be released from prison Saturday, but will remain under house arrest.Others arrested Monday include former Inter Milan and Roma player Luigi Sartor, former Serie B player Alessandro Zamperini and active players Carlo Gervasoni of Piacenza and Filippo Carobbio of Spezia.- http://www.usatoday.com

AC Milan set for further talks with Manchester City over Carlos Tevez

The Rossoneri are still trying to persuade the Premier League leader to allow the player to move to San Siro in January on loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.

Officials from AC Milan and Manchester City are reportedly meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss Carlos Tevez’s proposed move to San Siro.

Milan sporting director Ariedo Braida will once again attempt to persuade the English outfit to allow the Argentine forward to leave Eastlands on loan with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Italian sports daily also claims that City has agreed to the talks because Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in Tevez has cooled, with the French outfit now said to have turned its attention to signing Porto forward Hulk.

Tevez has not played for the City since refusing to come on as a substitute during September’s Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

The player was subsequently told he had no future at the club by manager Roberto Mancini but City has struggled to find a buyer for the player because of Tevez’s wage demands and the size of the transfer fee the club is demanding for the want-away striker.

Milan is keen to strengthen its forward line with Antonio Cassano set to miss the rest of the season after undergoing heart surgery but has repeatedly stated that the club will only sign players on loan in January. - http://www.goal.com

12BET Italy Series matches Review

Siena 0-0 Fiorentina
In a heated Tuscan derby on Tuesday, Siena and Fiorentina could only register a goalless draw at the Artemio Franchi, but did manage to record 10 yellow cards.

Giuseppe Sannino's side was arguably the more deserving team of the three points, but the lack of clinical finishing in front of goal inevitably took away the opportunity to end the dreadful bout of recent form.

Siena hitman Emanuele Calaio was the primary outlet during the 90 minutes, but also the guilty party, as he proceeded to miss several chances, including two headers, one of which rattled the crossbar.

The game then became an end-to-end contest, as Stevan Jovetic's volley was parried away by Zeljko Brkic, while Valon Behrami and Alessandro Gamberini also had opportunities to break La Viola's duck.

The Bianconeri soon hit back, but Gaetano D'Agostino's free kick impressively forced Artur Boruc into action, while Jovetic could only balloon his shot over the crossbar from 20 yards deep in injury time.

The result keeps both sides of Tuscany stuck in the lower reaches of Serie A, as Fiorentina has now won only one of its past six in the league under Delio Rossi, while Siena has won only one of its seven matches.
Cagliari 0-2 AC Milan
Match Report
The Rossoneri go into the winter break on a high after a two-goal victory against the islanders moved them ahead of Juventus at the league summit, thanks to an own goal from Francesco Pisano and a Zlatan Ibrahimovic strike.
Udinese 0-0 Juventus
Match Report
Claudio Marchisio went close for the visitors during the first half but, for the most part, both sides struggled horribly to create chances during a terribly anti-climactic clash, which sees the Old Lady forced to end 2011 in second place.
Parma 3-3 Catania

Arguably the game of the round saw Parma and Catania play out an enthralling goal fest at the Tardini, as a 3-3 draw was the final outcome on Wednesday.
The fixture sprang into life after just five minutes, as Daniele Galloppa's cross met Francesco Modesto, who beat the offside trap to head Franco Colomba's men into the lead.
However, Sergio Almiron made it 1-1 on 21 minutes after tapping the ball into the back of the net from close range, but two minutes later Parma restored its advantage - this time from the wizardry of the returning Sebastian Giovinco, who lead a breakaway and allowed Jonathan Biabiany to ping the ball into the top corner.
The Ducali proceeded to add a third of genuine quality soon after, as Sergio Floccari finished Giovinco's cross with great aplomb to seemingly put Parma in the driving seat against Catania.
However, Vincenzo Montella's halftime team talk appeared to do the trick, as within 21 minutes of the second half initiating a naive piece of defending from Fabiano Santacroce bring down Alejandro Gomez, thus paving the way for Francesco Lodi to net from the penalty spot and score in second successive game.
And the comeback was well and truly finished with just two minutes of normal time remaining, as substitute Andrea Catellani powered a right-footed shot past Antonio Mirante and hand his side a well deserved point.

Parma falls to 13th following the result, but Catania moves up to ninth for the winter break.
Novara 2-2 Palermo
An equally exciting game in Piedmont saw Novara bravely come back from behind to consign Palermo to a disappointing 2-2 draw in Bortolo Mutti's first game back in Sicily.

The opener came on 20 minutes in the favor of the Rosanero, as Josip Ilicic's cross from the right side was unfortunately diverted in by Carlalberto Ludi, who proceeded to net into his own goal.

However, just two minutes before halftime, Ilicic turned from hero into villain, after reacting badly to a Massimo Paci challenge, and in turn being shown a straight red card.

Despite the sending off, Novara surprisingly went further behind, and it seemed as if the points were sealed on 74 minutes, thanks to a great goal from Nicolas Bertolo, who beat two defenders before slamming the ball past Samir Ujkani.

But a valiant display from Atilio Tesser's men was in the offing as they managed to rescue a share of the spoils. Andrea Mazzarani's lovely long-range shot past Francesco Benussi, albeit with a deflection from Matias Silvestre, began the shift in momentum.

The draw was then confirmed with six minutes of play left as Michel Morganella's ball across the face of goal found star performer Marco Rigoni, who netted his sixth goal of the season with a vicious strike.

Palermo drops to ninth in the standings, while Novara stays put in 19th.
Lazio 0-0 Chievo
Lazio's Serie A aspirations took a blow on Wednesday evening, after a uninspiring meeting with Chievo meant a 0-0 draw was the team's eventual fate.

Despite overriding possession against the Flying Donkey's, the home side failed to hit the target in any of seven strikes at its opponent's goal.

However, the club had to thank goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri, who put in a point-saving shift between the sticks after he successfully endured frequent goalmouth pressure from Chievo, which managed to produce four attempts at goal.

Indeed it was the visiting side which had the best chance of the game through defender Cesar just two minutes in, but his attempt crashed off the woodwork, as the result sees Lazio stay fourth, while Chievo climbs to 12th in Serie A.
Inter 4-1 Lecce
Match Report | Player Ratings
The visiting side took an early lead but from there on the home team dominated the game and completed a fantastic comeback, with a flurry of second half goals from Giampaolo Pazzini, Diego Milito, Esteban Cambiasso and Ricky Alvarez to cancel out Luis Muriel's opener.
Atalanta 4-1
Cesena
A fine performance from former Sampdoria forward Guido Marilungo inspired Atalanta to a 4-1 mauling against Cesena on Wednesday, as coach Stefano Colantuono will be delighted his decision to drop Maxi Moralez was vindicated.
However, it was the visiting side which took the lead. Just 12 minutes in, Antonio Candreva netted past Andrea Consigli with little space to maneuver.

But soon after, Atalanta gathered the motivation to steamroll its Emila-Romagna counterpart, as Guillermo Rodriguez felled Marilungo from behind, allowing German Denis to score yet again from the penalty spot. He now tops the scoring charts with 12 for the campaign.

Marilungo then became the scorer, rather than the provider, after beating the Cesena defense.

If the victory was not already sealed, then a fourth allayed any fears of a Seahorses comeback, as fullback Peluso bagged an individual goal of the highest quality, taking on two Cesena defenders before powering the ball home.

Atalanta rises to 11th place, on 22 points following the triumph, but Cesena remains stuck in 18th for the winter break.
Napoli 6-1
Genoa
Match Report
Four goals in the opening 45 minutes set the Partenopei on their way to victory for a scintillating performance against their Ligurian opponent, as a Cavani brace, plus strikes from Gargano, Hamsik and Zuniga cap a storming return to form.
Bologna 0-2 Roma

The second part of the season looks bright for Roma after securing a second consecutive victory, thanks to a comfortable 2-0 win over Bologna on Wednesday.

Luis Enrique's men started on the front foot, as Rodrigo Taddei's 17th minute strike from the edge of the box flew past Jean-Francois Gillet to give his side the initiative early on.

And with just five minutes of first half action left, Pablo Osvaldo collected Erik Lamela's incisive pass, before coolly slotting the ball past the Belgian to seal the three points for the Giallorossi.

However, there was some late commotion involving Stefano Pioli's outfit, as Daniele Portanova was given his marching orders on 77 minutes, following his decision to barrack the referee for Diego Perez's yellow card moments earlier.

Despite the Rossoblu's impressive start to life under Pioli, they remain 17th in the table and have now won only one of their past seven league games. Roma, meanwhile, finds itself in seventh place, 10 points behind leader Milan.- http://sports.yahoo.com

AC Milan defender Daniele Bonera happy with win over Siena

The 30-year-old was pleased with the character shown by his team-mates to overcome Giuseppe Sannino's determined strugglers and go top of Italy's Serie A on Saturday

Massimilano Allegri's team met heavy resistance but ultimately bagged the three points courtesy of a fine strike by Antonio Nocerino and a penalty from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

After the game, 30-year-old Bonera underlined his side's determination and ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

"It was a difficult game. Siena defended well, but we managed to show character, and it was much easier after the goal," the defender told Sky Sports.

The former Parma man, who played at right back for AC Milan in the game, insisted that whilst he prefers to play in the centre of the defence, he is ready to help fill holes elsewhere at the back.

He continued: "I consider myself a centre-half, I hope I can be given a chance at that position. However, I am always available to help out wide, if the coach wants me to."

Bonera also had a word on the league standings, following AC Milan's ascension to the top.

"Now we have to wait and see how the others [Juventus and Udinese] fare, we are first for tonight."
Milan have a one point lead in Serie A, but Juventus can leapfrog them with a positive result against Novara on Sunday afternoon.- http://www.goal.com

Inter's Claudio Ranieri praises youngsters after Genoa victory

The former Roma man was pleased with the impact of Poli in particular as they claimed a narrow victory on Tuesday evening, moving them up to seventh in Serie A

Inter coach Claudio Ranieri reserved praise for his side's younger players after the Serie A giants earned a hard-fought 1-0 away win against Genoa.

Yuto Nagatomo's 67th minute strike was the only goal of the game as the 2011 Coppa Italia winners moved up to seventh in Italy's top tier.

Ranieri was pleased with the victory, although he did accuse Genoa of playing in a defensive manner.

"I think it was a better performance from us. Genoa were very closed at the back, their first shot on goal was on 80 minutes, but we were definitely good value for the three points," Ranieri told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

Andrea Poli, a summer loan signing from Sampdoria, made his first start for the club in Serie A and Ranieri was impressed with the midfielder.

"The youngsters have done well tonight. I particularly enjoyed Poli, who played a great game," he added.

"Zarate is someone we are trying to bring back [to first-team football]. He is still not fully fit, but when he is running like the others he will allow us to win many games because he is a champion."

Inter are in league action again this weekend when they face another away trip to Cesena where they will be looking to continue their rise up the table. - http://www.goal.com
